The safety ledger
Safety is a number. We publish it.
Most contractor safety pages are adjectives. This one is a ledger: the EMR, the hours, the stop-work calls, and the org-chart decision that keeps the reporting honest.
Figures illustrative. Fictional demo company.
What an EMR actually tells you
The experience modification rate is the insurance industry's audited verdict on a contractor's safety record: 1.0 is average for your trade mix, lower is better, and it is calculated by a third party from your actual claims. It is the one safety number a contractor cannot write for themselves. Ours is 0.68, and it is the first number Priya Ramesh puts on the screen in any owner interview. Illustrative here, like all demo figures, but on a real site this number would be verified annually and published the week it updates.
The program, not the poster
Every crew, ours or a subcontractor's, completes a written pre-task plan every shift: what could hurt someone today, and what we changed about the plan because of it. Superintendents carry OSHA-30; every craft hire completes OSHA-10 in their first month. Third-party auditors walk our sites quarterly, unannounced, and their findings go to the president unedited.
Stop-work authority, exercised
Every badge on a Gantry site carries stop-work authority, and the measure of whether that is real is whether anyone uses it. In the last million craft hours it was used 96 times. Every one of those calls got a written thank-you from the safety director, because the alternative culture, where stopping work feels expensive, is how streaks end in an ambulance.
Reporting past operations
Priya reports to the president, not to the VP of operations. That is deliberate. Safety findings that route through the people accountable for the schedule arrive softened. Ours arrive raw, monthly, with the stop-work log attached.
- Pre-task plans, every crew, every shift
- Stop-work authority on every badge
- OSHA-30 for all superintendents
- Quarterly third-party audits, unannounced
- Charged standpipes floor-by-floor on framing
- Near-miss reviews that change standards
“A streak is partly luck. The systems are not. Audit the systems.”
