Craft No. 02 · The build

Landscape Construction

We build what we draw. One crew, one foreman, one sequence: earthwork and drainage, then stone, then structures, then soil, then plants. The order is the craft.

Bands are fictional and illustrative; this is a demonstration website.

Construction is where most landscape projects lose their nerve: three subcontractors who have never met, a schedule that slips a month at a time, a homeowner turned reluctant general contractor. We run it differently. Hedgerow & Vale crews are our own gardeners and masons, led by a foreman who was in the design presentations and knows why every line on the drawing is there.

The sequence never changes. Earthwork and drainage come first, because a garden that holds water in the wrong place fails no matter how beautiful the planting. Stone and hard structure come second, while the ground can still take machines. Soil comes third: we rebuild planting beds with compost and mineral amendment to a depth most contractors never touch. Plants come last, at the right week of the right season for each species, not on the calendar week the schedule happens to end.

You will know the number before we begin, and you will know early if it needs to move. Our proposals price the work in phases against the master plan's investment analysis, and change orders happen on paper before they happen on the ground. Twenty-two seasons in, most of our builds still finish within the band we quoted at the master plan.

Every build closes the same way: a full-site fine rake, a walkthrough with the designer, a written care calendar for the first year, and a standing invitation into our stewardship program, because the day the crew leaves is the day the garden starts.
