What happens next
Within two business days you will hear from Iris or Owen to arrange the walk. Bring your questions and your honest budget; we will bring ours. If the fit is right, the written follow-up includes a flat design fee, and the garden begins the way all of ours do: on paper, unhurried.
Sensible questions
Asked before most walks.
What does a garden like the ones on this site cost?
Our design-build projects generally begin around $75,000, and most full master-plan builds land between $150,000 and $400,000, phased over one to three seasons (figures illustrative for this demo site). The master plan itself is a flat fee quoted after the first walk, and its investment analysis prices each phase honestly so you decide the pace. Design fees are credited toward construction when we build the work.
Do you take on smaller projects?
Sometimes, and honestly. A single terrace, a border renovation, or an orchard rescue is welcome when the calendar allows, and our seasonal crews handle spring and autumn work for gardens not in full stewardship. What we decline is work without a plan; even a small project gets a drawing, because the alternative is the accumulated-by-accident landscape this studio exists to prevent.
How far ahead should we start the conversation?
A season ahead, ideally two. A master plan takes six to ten weeks, and build slots book a season out (autumn is usually committed by July). If you want to plant in the ideal autumn window, the walk should happen by spring.
Will you work with a garden another firm designed or built?
Gladly, if it is good work, and tactfully if it is not. Several estates in our stewardship program came to us with fine existing gardens, and our first year is spent learning a garden before we propose changing it.
Do you only use native plants?
Native-forward, not native-only. Around two-thirds of a typical planting plan is Kentucky and Upland South natives, because they root into this limestone and rainfall without argument and bring the pollinators with them. The rest are proven garden cultivars that earn their place. Ideology does not water anything; the ratio is horticultural.
What does stewardship cost, and can anyone join?
Programs are priced to the garden, typically $14,000 to $85,000 per year (illustrative), covering a written annual calendar, a dedicated horticulturist and crew, and design observations fed back to the studio. Enrollment opens each January and is deliberately limited; gardens we designed and built have first claim on new places.
