Craft No. 05 · The gathering points

Fire & Water Features

Every garden needs a place people gravitate to after dark and a sound that cools the air in July. Fire and water are the oldest tools in the craft, and the easiest to get wrong.

A fire terrace extends the garden's season by three months on either end. October and March, the months the Bluegrass does best, belong to the families with somewhere warm to sit outside. We build wood-burning fire circles in dry-stone with seat walls at the right height and distance, and gas fire tables where smoke or code makes wood impractical. The measure of success is simple: does the family end up out there on a Thursday in November.

Water wants restraint. A four-foot sheet of falling water in the wrong place makes conversation impossible; a rill two hands wide, running along the edge of a terrace, cools the whole space and lets people talk over it. We favor still reflecting pools that double the sky, narrow rills that move water through the garden, and carved-stone basins that give birds a reason to visit. Koi ponds and grottoes we leave to the previous decade.

Both crafts are engineering first. Fire features get proper gas lines, ember screens, and setbacks that satisfy the county before they satisfy the eye. Water features get balanced circulation sized to the volume, bottom drains that make autumn cleanout a chore instead of a weekend, and freeze protection that lets the feature winter over without drama.

Placed well, one of each is enough. The fire pulls people out in the cold months, the water holds them in the hot ones, and the garden works all year, which is the entire point of designing in four seasons.

The craft, itemized

  • Dry-stone fire circles with seat walls
  • Gas fire tables and outdoor hearths
  • Reflecting pools and formal basins
  • Rills and runnel channels in cut stone
  • Balanced circulation, drains, freeze protection
  • Code-compliant gas and setback engineering
