Craft No. 10 · Stewardship
Estate Care
A garden is not a project; it is a subscription to the seasons. Our stewardship program keeps a standing crew and a trained horticulturist on your property through the year, editing the garden the way its designer intended.
Bands are fictional and illustrative; this is a demonstration website.
The difference between a garden at year five and a landscape at year five is care. Not mowing-and-blowing, but horticulture: pruning that respects how each species actually grows, borders edited before they blur, soil fed as deliberately as it was built. Roughly forty families across the Bluegrass keep their gardens with us, most of them in gardens we designed and built, some in fine gardens that came to us for keeping.
Every estate in the program gets a written annual calendar, specific to its garden. The dormant pruning of the orchard in February. The cutting down of the meadow in March, late enough that the birds have finished with the seed heads. The spring soil work, the June edit, the autumn planting window when the real changes happen, the structural check after the first hard frost. Your crew arrives on that calendar, led by the same horticulturist all year, and leaves a note of what was done and what is coming.
Stewardship is also how gardens improve. Each visit feeds observations back to the design studio: the corner that stays wet, the rose that has earned retirement, the view that opened when the neighbor lost a tree. Small design moves ride along with care, a few plants at a time, which is how the best gardens in the program have quietly doubled in richness over a decade.
The program is deliberately small and admission is seasonal; we take on new estates each winter, in January, so the year begins with the calendar. If the garden matters to you, this is the craft that protects the investment every other page on this site describes.
The craft, itemized
- A written annual calendar, specific to your garden
- The same horticulturist and crew all year
- Species-correct pruning and border editing
- Soil care: compost, mineral feed, no routine chemicals
- Design observations fed back to the studio
- Enrollment each January, deliberately limited

A pond-edge acre designed month by month, and the garden this studio photographs across the whole year to prove what four-season design means.
Begin with a walk in the garden.
The first meeting is a morning on your property: no drawings, no obligation, just an honest read of the ground and how you want to live on it.
