“AC quit at 1 pm on the hottest Saturday of June. Booked the 4 to 6 window from my phone, Devon showed at 4:20, capacitor swapped, cold air by 5. The price he quoted on the porch is the price I paid.”
Every Richmond house has one: the bonus room over the garage that is a sauna by 3 pm, the finished attic nobody can sleep in past June, the sunroom that is really a greenhouse. Running new ductwork to those rooms is invasive and expensive. A ductless mini split solves the room in a day with a three inch hole in the wall.
One outdoor unit drives one or several indoor heads, each with its own remote and its own temperature. Modern cold-climate heat pump models heat efficiently through a Virginia winter too, which makes them a legitimate whole-house option, not just a spot fix.
Where mini splits earn their keep
- Room additions and sunrooms the original ductwork never reached
- Finished attics and bonus rooms with 10 degree swings
- Garage workshops and detached studios
- Historic homes where duct chases would wreck the plaster
- Whole-house electrification when paired with cold-climate heads
Sizing and install, done properly
A wrongly sized head short-cycles and leaves rooms clammy, so we run the same load math on a single room that we run on a whole house. Placement matters as much: your installer maps the line set route and head position with you before drilling anything, and the finished line hide is a color-matched channel, not exposed tubing.
Installs carry a 10 year parts warranty registered in your name and a 2 year Kelvin labor warranty (illustrative). Multi-zone quotes always show the per-zone math so you can trim the project to budget without guessing.

Fair questions
Do they really heat in winter?
Cold climate models hold full heating capacity to around 5 degrees F, far below a normal Richmond January night. We size for the design temperature, not the brochure.
What about the look of the indoor head?
Wall heads are the workhorse, but ceiling cassettes and low floor consoles exist when a white rectangle will not fly. We bring photos of all three to the consult.
Are there rebates?
Heat pump equipment often qualifies for utility and federal incentives. Amounts change; your quote lists what applies at signing (illustrative in this demo).

“Tina found a duct leak two other companies missed. House finally cools evenly upstairs. Worth every dollar of the diagnostic.”
“They text you a photo of your tech and where the van is. My wife was home alone with the baby and actually knew who was knocking. Small thing, huge thing.”

Two hour arrival windows, a tech you can vet before the doorbell, and the price agreed before work starts.
