Built by a plumber and an HVAC tech who kept a list

Every practice on this page started as a line in a notebook titled 'things this trade does to people that we will not do.'

The story

Kelvin, since 2016

Marcus Bell (master plumber) and Tina Alvarez (HVAC lead) met on a commercial job site in 2014, both moonlighting residential calls on weekends, both keeping the same private list: hourly bills that grew in the crawlspace, four hour arrival maybes, techs sold on commission quotas, customers who never learned what actually failed.

Kelvin Home Services opened in 2016 with that list inverted into policy. Flat rates printed in a book anyone can read. Two hour windows treated as promises with a penalty on us for missing. Techs paid salaries, not commissions, so a finding is a finding and not a mortgage payment. The name is the unit temperature is measured in, because measurement is the whole personality of this company.

Ten years on, the board runs about 12,500 jobs a year across 19 Richmond ZIP codes with a crew of 17 (fictional figures, illustrative). The notebook still exists. Things still get added.

The standard

What every Kelvin tech clears

  • Licensed for the work they run. License numbers print in our footer and in your confirmation text.
  • Background checked at hire and re-run every year. Not once, forever ago. Yearly.
  • Drug tested, pre-employment and random.
  • W-2 employees, never subcontractors. The person in your house answers to us, trains with us, and is insured by us.
  • Paid salary, zero commission. Nobody in your crawlspace is working toward a quota.
  • Photographed for your confirmation text. You see the face before the doorbell.

Careers

Good techs deserve a good shop

Salary instead of commission. A stocked van instead of three parts runs a day. A dispatch board that respects your evenings and an on-call rotation that is actually a rotation. Paid training toward your master license, and the tools bill is ours, not yours.

We hire licensed HVAC techs, plumbers, and apprentices who can pass the same vetting we advertise to customers. If the notebook philosophy above reads like relief instead of marketing, we should talk.

What the neighbors say

4.9 average across 2,384 reviews. Fictional reviews, illustrative of format.

“They text you a photo of your tech and where the van is. My wife was home alone with the baby and actually knew who was knocking. Small thing, huge thing.”

Chris M. · West End, water heater

“Membership reminder texts actually work. I have not thought about my furnace filter in a year and a half, which is the greatest luxury I own.”

Hannah L. · Northside, Whole-Home member

“Booked online at 9:40 pm for a leaking shutoff valve. Dispatcher called at 7:31 the next morning, tech landed in the 8 to 10 window. This is how it should work everywhere.”

Alicia F. · Museum District, plumbing repair
