Nell + Marcus Wren
A designer and a carpenter, married since 2007, in business since 2009, still arguing productively.
Every design-build firm claims the designer and builder work as one team. At Wrenhouse they share a kitchen table, which raises the stakes considerably.
Nell, the designer
Nell trained in interior architecture and spent her twenties drawing beautiful rooms for firms that handed them to the lowest bidder and hoped. The pattern radicalized her: designs gutted by value engineering, clients blaming the drawings, builders blaming the designer, everyone poorer and nobody happier. Her design philosophy now is budget-literate on principle. A drawing that cannot survive contact with its own price, she says, is not a design; it is a greeting card.
At Wrenhouse, Nell leads feasibility and still draws the first sketch of most projects. Clients know her for the morning audit, for asking what you eat for breakfast before asking what countertop you want, and for cheerfully deleting expensive ideas that will not earn their keep.
Marcus, the builder
Marcus swung his first hammer for pay at nineteen and ran his first crew at twenty-six. Twenty-nine years in, he has framed, trimmed, or fixed most of the ways a Wisconsin house can be put together and several ways it should not be. He hires every Wrenhouse carpenter personally, runs the apprenticeship program, and signs the two-year warranty with his own name because, in his words, the warranty is just a promise with paperwork.
His contribution to the Wrenhouse method is the published schedule: chapters, Friday updates, and a standing walkthrough. Silence, he says, is the most expensive thing a contractor can give you.
The argument that became a company
They met on a stalled remodel in 2005, she defending the drawings, he holding the framing bids that said the drawings were fantasy. The fix they negotiated, redesigning to the real budget together, in one room, with the client present, took an afternoon and became, four years later, the founding document of Wrenhouse. The studio was incorporated in 2009, two years into their marriage. Both anniversaries are observed. Only one gets flowers.
Nell and Marcus Wren are fictional characters created for this design demonstration.
