The house

Some houses are listed. This one is presented. The Fenwick residence has stood on Kenwood Parkway since 1911, and its current owners have spent three decades doing the unglamorous work that makes a century home honest: the slate roof relaid course by course, the boiler replaced with a quiet condensing system, the leaded casements releaded rather than replaced. What you see from the parkway is what you get inside. Nothing here is staged over a problem.

The main floor runs on the original plan, which is to say it runs on rooms: a real entry hall, a living room with the fireplace at its center rather than a television, a dining room that seats twelve under a plaster ceiling that has never been opened. The kitchen was rebuilt in 2021 in a way that defers to the house: painted cabinetry to the ceiling, soapstone counters, and unlacquered brass that has already started to darken into itself.

Upstairs, five bedrooms hold the family end of the house, including a primary suite carved gently from two smaller rooms, with a bath in marble and a dressing room behind a paneled door. The third floor is the surprise: a single long room under the roofline, currently a studio, that wants to be whatever its next owner needs most. Out back, the carriage house keeps two cars and a workshop, and the garden has been tended by the same hands for thirty-one years.

Guide No. 01

Kenwood, briefly

Kenwood sits between the lakes and the park like it was placed there by an editor. The houses are the city's early best work: Tudors, foursquares, and shingle-style commissions built between 1895 and 1930 for people who hired architects by name. It is not a neighborhood that announces itself, which is precisely its appeal.
