Linden Hills is a neighborhood people move to for a feeling, and 4128 Holbrook is that feeling with a street number. The porch runs the full width of the house and sits up just high enough to watch the street without belonging to it. Inside, the quartersawn oak survives everywhere it matters: the colonnade between living and dining rooms, the built-in buffet with its original leaded doors, the staircase that lands you in front of a window instead of a wall.

The current owners renovated in 2022 and had the discipline to stop at the right moment. The kitchen is new and unshowy: white oak cabinetry, honed granite, a range under the original window line. The back of the house opens through steel-framed doors to a bluestone terrace, which is where the house actually lives from May to October. Upstairs are four true bedrooms, an owners' bath added in the footprint of a sleeping porch, and closets a 1926 house has no right to have.

Four blocks north is the lake. Two blocks south is the village: the bakery, the bookshop, the hardware store that still sharpens things. Houses on this particular run of Holbrook change hands slowly and quietly, which is exactly why we photograph them properly when they do.
