The case for quiet interfaces

Most interfaces are loud because someone was afraid to leave a decision out. A dashboard grows a module every time a stakeholder asks "can we also show", and within a year the home screen carries nine things fighting for the same glance.
Restraint is a feature
A quiet interface is not a minimal one for its own sake. It is an interface that has decided what matters most and given it room. Everything else moves a layer deeper, reachable but not shouting.
The test is simple. Open the screen and time how long it takes to answer the one question the user came with. If the answer is buried under equally weighted elements, the design has not made a decision yet.
How to get there
Start with a card-sort, not a wireframe. Let the priorities come from the people who use the thing. Then be willing to demote the rest. The relief a user feels when a screen respects their attention is the whole job.
